Why Should I Drink Water After a Massage?

Following a massage at our Edmonds chiropractic clinic, it is often suggested that you drink a lot of water. This is common advice from many massage therapists. It’s based on the generally accepted belief that massage releases toxins from your tissues, and that drinking water serves to help flush these toxins out of your system and keeps them from knotting up your muscles again.

In truth, this is mostly theory. The connection between massage and the toxicity of your body has not been clearly demonstrated scientifically. However, until further studies can be performed, it’s hard to argue that it’s a good idea to remain properly hydrated. If you’re drinking water after your massage, this means that you’re likely not drinking sugary, alcoholic, or caffeinated beverages that may not interact well with the effects of massage. Do the right thing for your body, and follow your massage with a tall drink of water.
