Pulling vs. Pushing

Our chiropractic in Edmonds has spoken before on the importance of lifting with your legs, rather than your back. However, when you’re trying to move an object that is too large to lift, do you know how to protect your back?

When you find yourself in a position where you’re either pushing or pulling on a large, heavy object, you’re better off pushing than pulling. Pushing tends to make use of your stomach muscles more than your back, whereas pulling puts a lot of stress on your back muscles. Stand close to the object, tighten your abdominal muscles, and use both arms to push. Avoid leaning forward or bending your back while you push. This will allow you to minimize any strain on your back.
